Making money online by targeting specific niches of advertisement can be a great way to make extra profits, or as a sole income source if you’re good within your niche. The only problem with this is that niches on the Internet tend to dry up quickly and become over-saturated, so affiliate marketers and those relying on advertising dollars can never afford to stay within the same niche for too long. The old cliche, “Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket” really applies here, but how can you determine profitable niches that aren’t over-saturated?
1. Quick Keyword Search Using Adwords
Adwords is a tool designed by Google to help advertisers determine how much an advertising campaign will cost them for a specific keyword. You can also use this tool to determine a profitable niche by performing searches for various keywords. Some niches have more value than others as they can sustain saturation and are essentially timeless. However, news and health related niches are often fickle as times change.
If you have a site you’d like to check related keywords for, then simply type in the URL. From there, Google Adwords will show you a list of keywords that are most often associated with that site. This style of list gives you an idea of whether or not the niche will be profitable according to the amount charged for each CPC. Niches with high retention rates like online games and gambling are always popular but oversaturated. That doesn’t mean you can’t get into this niche without the right leverage.
2. Understand Micro-Niches and Long tail Keywords
Just because a large general niche like “online poker” is crowded doesn’t mean you can’t find yourself a profitable micro-niche. A micro-niche is a niche within a niche that only appeals to a smaller subset of users from the original niche. Since there are many different games of poker available online and certain people may only enjoy certain rules, online poker is a great niche to market specifically to a micro-niche. Other niches will experience the same micro-niche breakdown, so utilize this to your advantage.
Long tail keywords are words specifically related to your overall niche, but they’re custom tailored for the micro-niche you’re targeting. A good example of a few long tail keywords within a niche are “texas hold ‘em poker” and “five card stud poker”. Since these keywords relate to a specific game of poker being played, targeting long tail keywords will bring about better search results for those who are seeking your micro-niche.
3. Average Searches Mean Everything
Before picking your micro-niche and the specific long-tail keywords you want to target, you need to make sure they have enough average monthly searches in order to sustain a website dedicated tot he niche. A micro-niche that is targetable should have a sustained average search number of at least 2,400 per month. This means there are enough people searching for your keywords to sustain a site dedicated to serving content and advertisements to those looking for it.
