When it comes to being a webmaster, one of the most time consuming, frustrating and annoying things that you have to do is link building. While link building takes time, the payoff is rewarding. Building links to your site is the top way to boost your rankings. However, it is also important to build the right kinds of links to your site. It is more about the quality of the links you build, than the quantity. A quality link on a top site is more powerful than a hundred links on a poor quality site.
There are several ways to go about building links to your site. Here are a few things that you can do that work for most types of websites. There are also several things that you should not do at any time.
Lists
One of the best ways to build links to your site is by creating “list” articles. People simply cannot resist reading and linking list documents Create a top ten list for the topic of your choice or an easy tips for doing just about anything. Resource lists also work very well. Another idea is to create a list of experts in the field. This is a great way to impress individuals and hopefully get them to link back to your site as well. Any type of list that gives information about your subject is easy to work links into.
News
Submit articles to sites like EzineArticles, iSnare, GoArticles, etc. These article sites typically have great rankings and will send higher quality traffic to your site. If you have an SEO site or a Blank site, write an article and send it to an industry news site. Press releases sent to the right bloggers and journalists can be a quick way to get links to your site. Offer the people/sites that pick up your articles exclusive content or news.
Directories and Social Bookmarking
Submit your site to directories that allow free submissions or pay to submit to your site to other directories. It is important to remember that quality is extremely important when submitting to these sites. You can even create a topical directory that is related to your field. Meme trackers are a great way to see what types of topics are spreading. If you write about these topics and use original content, chances are you will get your site listed as a source on the site.
How Not to Build Links
Forum Spam
There are several things that you should not do to build links to your site. One of them is creating forum spam. This includes posting only when you can add a link to your site in the posting area, and asking the same question at 15 different forums in the same period are simply bad ideas.
Blog Spam
Similar to forum spam, there are things that you should not do on your blog. You should not sign your blog comments with keywords, or market your site on the very first blog comment. You should never post a comment that is irrelevant to the subject being written about; this is a great way to have a person assume a bot is posting comments.
Timing
Link building for your website comes down to timing. If you have a website that is just starting out, with only a few links from sites that do not have page rank or any type of quality ranking in search engines themselves, you need to think about getting a few high ranking links from a neutral website. Education websites are typically a good place to start. An editorial in a newspaper site or from a trusted press release site such as PR.web are good places as well.
Now, if your domain has been around for awhile but is continuously stuck on page three when your keyword is entered, you will need to have a different link building strategy in place. There is no need to focus on high PR links, but rather IP diversity and quotes from other sources such as blogs, article marketing, or directories.
The whole point of link building is to build up your ratings. It is important to use techniques that are relevant to your website. Use links that count and do not waste time on the “noise.”
